2026 Syllabus - Popular Voice

Voice classes that are not graded are split into ages, not levels. Song selections may be from the RCM or CC lists, but DO NOT need to be chosen from those lists.

Age ranges are divided as follows:

·         Beginner: ages 6 to 8

·         Primary: ages 9 and 10

·         Elementary: ages 11 and 12

·         Junior: ages 13 and 14

·         Intermediate: ages 15 and 16

·         Senior: ages 17 and 18

·         Advanced: ages 19 to 28

·         Adult: 29 and over

Each competitor must provide an original copy of their music for the adjudicator. Is there is an accompanist, they must also have original music at the piano in accordance with the Rules and Regulations. Failure to provide original music, or providing no music at all, will result in disqualification.

Music choices must be age-appropriate with lyrics that are suitable for all audiences.

Competitors are allowed to transpose their selections to suit their voice range.

Unless a piece is specifically written to be unaccompanied, it must have accompaniment, or the submission will be for adjudication only and will not be eligible for placing or recommendation to Provincials.

Own choice of one selection of music.

Competitors can enter multiple times for the same class.

Total performance time limit of 5 minutes.

Competitors must perform a selection in any of the following genres: pop. This will include songs from the following categories: Pop/folk, R & B, soul, rock, alternative, indie, jazz, country, musical theatre songs, cabaret, revues, operetta, and songs from movie musicals and animated films.

Rap, hip hop, and RCM or CC classical syllabi (lists A and B from Levels 1 to 6; List A, B and C from Levels 7 to 10) are NOT permitted.

Memorization is encouraged. To receive an award or mark, and to be eligible for provincials, memorization is mandatory. Please refer to Rules 19 – 22 for specifics. 

Competitors do not accompany themselves.

Music Tracks are allowed as accompaniment. Backtracks may be piano, acoustic guitar or backtracks without harmony or background singing. A speaker and a microphone will be provided for the performance.  

Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
